Co404 San Cristóbal is a coworking community in a quiet residential corner of San Cristóbal de las Casas, a "pueblo mágico" in Mexico's Chiapas highlands at 2,000m elevation, with mild temperatures year-round. Guests spend evenings in the garden swinging in hammocks, work and cook together during the week, and take weekend day trips to the Sumidero Canyon and cloud forest. The house is five minutes from the local market and fifteen from the Centro Histórico.

Co404 calls its guests "Professional Backpackers" — solo, long-term travellers who want to work hard on weekdays and explore evenings and weekends. Every decision, from who is hired to how activities are planned to how spaces are designed, is built around making it easy for guests to form friendships.
Each location has one permanent manager and daily cleaning staff, but is otherwise run by social volunteers living the same lifestyle as the guests, whose only job is to be present — starting conversations, planning activities and answering questions; a four-night minimum stay means there are no constant check-ins to distract them. Spaces are designed to feel like home rather than a luxury hotel: an oversized dining table seats everyone for the Wednesday family dinner, and a fully stocked kitchen keeps guests cooking together rather than eating out. Weekly organised activities remove the decision fatigue of solo travel, so guests only need to show up and join in.
Co404 began with three friends — Laurens, Jocelyn ("Joss") and David — who met while volunteering together at a hostel in Tulum in 2017. Joss and Laurens fell in love, and after a holiday visit to San Cristóbal, inspired by a friend earning money managing Airbnbs, they decided to renovate a four-bedroom apartment there themselves, using little more than Laurens's engineering degree, Joss's design eye and their maxed-out savings.
The Airbnb opened on March 1st, 2020 — just as the pandemic hit. After early tourist bookings dried up, the rooms filled instead with remote workers fleeing lockdowns, including David, who had fled the U.S. With rents falling in San Cristóbal and an abandoned hostel up for sale, the three saw an opportunity: remote workers needed stable WiFi and a community of similarly "unstable" people willing to travel during a pandemic. They invested everything into converting that hostel into a co-working and co-living space, opening two months ahead of schedule because remote workers were already knocking on the door asking for a bed and a desk. Co404 San Cristóbal was born on March 27th, 2021, as the first Co404 location, later followed by Oaxaca and Medellín.
Co404 is situated in the highlands of Chiapas at 2,000m elevation, in the charming pueblo mágico of San Cristóbal de las Casas. The coliving sits in a quiet residential neighborhood called Barrio de Mexicanos — calm enough to focus, yet just a short walk from the city's vibrant heart. The Plaza Central (main square) is a 13-minute walk away, and the colorful Guadalupe pedestrian street is just around the corner.
Guests describe the city as "vibrant, full of music and colors, friendly people, lots of small cafés and pubs to explore, and lots of good food to taste." San Cristóbal is known for its rich indigenous culture, with nearby Mayan villages like San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán where ancient traditions blend with Catholic influences. The surrounding state of Chiapas is home to remarkable natural wonders, from dramatic canyons to crystalline lakes and jungle ruins.
The city enjoys a mild climate year-round (~20°C during the day) thanks to its elevation, offering a refreshing contrast to Mexico's typically hot and humid lowlands. Nights cool down to around 10°C, ideal for bonfires.
