Co404 wants it to be "ridiculously easy" for guests to make friends, a goal that shapes who is hired, what activities are planned, and how the spaces are designed. Each location has a permanent manager and cleaning staff, but is otherwise run by social volunteers living the same lifestyle as guests, whose only job is to be present, start conversations, plan activities and answer questions — made possible by a four-night minimum stay that avoids daily check-in distractions.
Spaces are designed to feel like home rather than a luxury hotel: an oversized dining table seats everyone for the Wednesday family dinner, and a fully stocked kitchen keeps guests gathering rather than dining out. Weekly activities are pre-planned so decision fatigue isn't a barrier to joining in.
Co404 was founded by three friends — Laurens, Jocelyn ("Joss") and David — who met volunteering at a hostel in Tulum in 2017. Laurens, restless with his engineering degree, wondered if there was a way to travel that used his brain while still earning; Joss, tired of a job that only rewarded her with unpaid leave, wanted to build something of her own after falling in love with Laurens. The pair opened an Airbnb in San Cristóbal, renovating a four-bedroom apartment with savings and a maxed-out credit card.
The Airbnb opened on March 1st, 2020, only for the pandemic to upend everything. Remote workers — including David, fleeing lockdown in the U.S. — soon filled the rooms. Seeing that digital nomads needed stable WiFi and a community of like-minded people still choosing to travel through a pandemic, the three converted an abandoned hostel into what became Co404, opening in San Cristóbal in March 2021 (two months earlier than planned, because remote workers kept knocking on the door needing only a bed and a desk). Oaxaca followed in August 2022, its design mapped out on loose paper at a hostel bartop, and Medellín opened in November 2024.
