About La Cocotera

La Cocotera is a coliving and coworking community in the southernmost point of Europe, set in the heart of Tarifa, Spain. Housed in a beautiful family home with stunning views of Africa and the old town, it is where digital nomads and remote workers live, work, and meet — just minutes from the beach. Since 2014, it has served as a meeting point between digital knowmads and the local culture of Tarifa.

Origin story

In 2014, co-founders Marina and Veronica teamed up to create La Cocotera — with much energy and few resources, they started giving the coconut a go.

Their goal was to bring value to the paradise of Tarifa and satisfy the needs of nomad workers looking for a healthy place to live, work, and have fun. Entrepreneurship, for them, is a form of expression to improve their environment — pursued through the social economy as a cooperative, which they understand as a more humanized form of company.

In 2017, La Cocotera won the award for the Most Innovative Cooperative in the province of Cadiz. Over the years, Marina also became the founder of Tarifa's digital nomad scene, growing the community from zero to seven thousand members.

Community philosophy

La Cocotera believes that change and improvement are pursued by betting on one's own talent, facilitating connections, and building relationships based on the philosophy of win-win-win.

The space is focused so that digital nomads have every opportunity to bond, grow, and learn together. Each new member brings something different to the table, making for the best get-togethers, family dinners, unforgettable excursions, and much more.

The monthly pass includes at least one community activity each week — skill exchanges, talks, excursions, or masterminds — varied each month. Once a month, a community dinner is included, along with a welcome session to choose between yoga or breathwork.

La Cocotera also connects nomads with the broader local culture of Tarifa, fostering a sincere curiosity between locals and nomads who live, work, surf, and party together.

Location

C/ San Rosendo, 12, Tarifa, 11380, Spain

La Cocotera is situated in the heart of Tarifa's historic old town (casco antiguo), a beautifully preserved Moorish whitewashed district in the southernmost point of continental Europe. The surrounding streets are narrow, pedestrian-friendly lanes lined with whitewashed buildings, local tapas bars, restaurants, and boutique shops. The location offers stunning panoramic views of Africa and the Strait of Gibraltar from the rooftop terrace, with Morocco visible just 14 km across the water.

Tarifa sits at the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, making it a unique coastal destination known as the 'City of Wind' and a world-class destination for wind sports. The old town is home to a 1,000-year-old Moorish castle, a lively tapas scene, and a vibrant mix of locals and international visitors.

Guests consistently describe the location as right in the center of Tarifa, with easy walking access to the main tapas street, shops, and the beach. The neighborhood is generally quiet, especially in the old town section where the hostel is located, though as a popular resort town it can be livelier in summer.
