Mareike opened Lava Coliving in 2023, fulfilling a dream that came true after years of diverse experiences. Her journey began with marine biology studies in North Wales, followed by a PhD in coral ecology in New Zealand, and work as a marine biologist across various Pacific Islands including Hawaii, Rarotonga, and American Samoa. In 2019, she moved to São Miguel and started helping with dog rescue, eventually establishing the coliving space four years later.
Lava Coliving is situated in a quiet and safe neighbourhood between the towns of Rabo de Peixe and Ribeira Grande on São Miguel Island. Guests describe the location as central and peaceful — well-positioned for exploring both the western side of the island (Seven Cities) and the east (Furnas), with Ponta Delgada about 15 minutes away by car.
The area sits close to Santa Bárbara Beach, one of São Miguel's most popular surfing spots (4.2 km away), and is within easy reach of Lagoa do Fogo (around 15 minutes by car). The surrounding landscape is typical of the Azores' volcanic terrain — lush green mountains, dramatic coastlines, and scenic hiking trails in all directions.
While the neighbourhood is residential and a car is essentially required for daily errands and exploration, guests consistently praise the peaceful atmosphere and the balance between being connected to the island's main attractions while remaining away from crowded tourist areas.
