About Barefoot Coliving

Barefoot is a coliving in Ericeira, Portugal, set in a peaceful green valley just a 10-minute walk from Ribeira d'Ilhas — one of the world's most famous surf spots in a World Surfing Reserve. Designed for digital nomads, surfers, and travellers, it blends the coziness of a hostel with the comfort of a hotel: private en-suite rooms, a real coworking setup, and warm, family-like community vibes that guests repeatedly call "a home away from home."

Origin story

Barefoot was born from founder Marion's personal search for the perfect place to reload. After living an adventurous life in Utrecht, she followed a long-spoken dream to the ocean, relocating with her partner and three kids to Portugal.

Through years of travel, Marion rarely found a place where she could truly unwind. She loved meeting new people, finding a surf or yoga buddy, and sharing good conversations around a campfire — but the noise and mess of hostels had lost their appeal. Hotels, on the other hand, felt too boring and unsociable. The question became: where to find that paradise feeling?

For Marion, that feeling meant taking off her shoes, relaxing, and feeling free — the Barefoot feeling. She set out to create what she called a "mature hostel": a combination of the coziness of a hostel, where guests can connect with others, and the luxury of a hotel, where they have the comfort and space to retreat. That vision became the Barefoot Guesthouse.

Community philosophy

Daily life at Barefoot goes way beyond sharing common areas with other random guests. The ever-evolving community attracts individuals from all over the world — typically freelancers, remote workers, surfers, yogis and nature enthusiasts who are open-minded, respectful and kind. Creativity, personal growth, and meaningful connections are core values.

Whether it's a yoga session in the garden or a jam session at the fire, everyone is encouraged to be part of the daily communal experience. At the same time, the space respects when colivers need to retreat for some alone time in the privacy of their own rooms.

Sustainability is also central to the Barefoot ethos — striving to live in harmony with nature through eco-friendly products, recycling, and responsible use of water and energy.

Location

Estr. Ribeira d'Ilhas 67, Santo Isidoro, 2640-051, Portugal

Barefoot Coliving is set in the Ribeira Valley, a lush green landscape just outside the town of Ericeira — Europe's only designated World Surfing Reserve. The house sits about a 5-minute drive (or roughly 50-minute walk) from Ericeira's town centre, and just a 10-minute walk from the world-famous Ribeira d'Ilhas surf spot. The surrounding landscape is defined by rolling green hills, a steep Atlantic coastline, and beautiful valley views visible from the garden and most rooms.

Despite its rural feel, Lisbon and its international airport are approximately 40 minutes away by car. Nearby points of interest include the historic Palácio Nacional de Mafra, the magical village of Sintra, and the medieval walled town of Óbidos.

Guests consistently describe the location as peaceful and serene, yet conveniently close to Ericeira's beaches. As one reviewer put it: "A bit outside of Ericeira, which makes it amazingly quiet and lets you feel like you are in nature." Another noted it is "close enough to the city to have all the benefits and far enough to have none of the downsides (like noisy parties or big crowds)." Most guests with a car find the location ideal; those without one typically rely on Uber, e-bikes, or the occasional walk.
