About NETS Cowork & Colive

Nets Cowork & Colive is a hip hotel and coworking space in Ahangama, a laid-back surf town on Sri Lanka's southern coast. Set in a jungle location just a 5-minute walk from the beach, it combines a 24/7 air-conditioned rooftop coworking space (the "pinkest coworking space in Sri Lanka") with comfortable coliving accommodation, a swimming pool, and a fully equipped kitchen — built for digital nomads who refuse to sacrifice ambition for lifestyle.

Origin story

Nets was born more out of necessity than anything else. After seven years of living in Sri Lanka — surfing at 5am, exploring new technologies, and discussing ideas — the founders wanted a space where they didn't have to choose between their ambitions and their lifestyle. So they created one.

The story behind Nets is also deeply personal. Founder Kroot grew up as the "smart kid" with big CEO dreams, but after university she felt she knew nothing. What followed was a whirlwind of experiences: an internship in India, backpacking across Asia, working on superyachts in the Caribbean, a job at a surf camp in Costa Rica, milking cows in Australia. Each time she considered settling down, the pull of sun, surf, and adventure sent her boarding another plane.

After seven years in Sri Lanka, having already established the Surfing Wombats hostel/restaurant and the clothing brand Hot Foot Surf, she launched Nets Cowork — a venture she holds close to her heart. Driven by a simple desire to be barefoot on the beach while still getting things done, Nets became the space where work and lifestyle finally coexist.

Community philosophy

Nets is built around the belief that you shouldn't have to sacrifice ambition for lifestyle — or lifestyle for ambition. The motto "Surf, Work, Connect" captures this ethos: guests are encouraged to get their work done, go surfing, do yoga, attend community events, and make lasting connections.

The space fosters a vibrant atmosphere that attracts a diverse community of like-minded professionals passionate about their work. Community events, social spaces, and shared activities — from surf classes to yoga lessons — are designed to help guests meet new people and form genuine bonds. The team also provides insider local tips, making guests feel at home rather than just passing through.

Nets is also a women-run operation, with a team that mainly consists of women, fostering a safe and empowering environment. Sustainability is woven into the philosophy too: solar power backup, natural refillable products, and filtered water units reflect a commitment to eco-conscious living.

Activities

Location

Mahavihara Rd, Ahangama 80650, Sri Lanka

Ahangama is a laid-back surf town on Sri Lanka's southern coast, known for its beautiful beaches, surf spots, and friendly community. The town has one main street where restaurants, cafés, beach bars, and shops come alive, especially in the evenings. The coastline is dotted with iconic surf breaks such as Kabalana, Sion, and Marshmallows, and Nets is just a 5-minute walk from the beach.

Nets sits slightly off the main road in a quiet jungle setting, just 2 minutes from Ahangama town center. Guests consistently describe the location as wonderfully quiet and calm — one reviewer noted it's "out of the main road so it's quiet in the night, but still very close to all the fun in town." Another described it as "peacefully situated just five minutes away from the bustling main road." The access road for the last ~200m is a narrow, bumpy dirt path, so arriving by scooter or tuk-tuk works best.

Nearby highlights include Koggala Lake and its boat safaris, the Kathaluwa Old Temple, the Handunugoda Tea Plantation (15-minute drive), and the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort (about 40 minutes away). Weligama and Mirissa — known for whale watching — are a short drive south.

Getting around

  • Very walkable
Nets is 2 minutes from Ahangama town center; beach, cafés, restaurants, and shops all reachable on foot.
Reviews: Guests consistently confirm the location feels close to everything: the beach is a 5-minute stroll, and restaurants, bars, and shops are nearby. The property sits just off the main road, keeping it quiet while remaining highly walkable.
  • Scooter rental
Nets can help arrange scooter rentals; rentals are also widely available across town at approximately €4–5/day and through the on-site tuk-tuk team. A Sri Lankan Driving Recognition Permit is required to ride legally.
Destinations: Surf breaks along the coast (Kabalana, Sion, Lazy Left, Marshmallows), Galle Fort (40 min), Unawatuna (30 min), Hiriketiya Beach (1 hour south), Mirissa, Handunugoda Tea Plantation (15 min), Koggala Lake
Reviews: Guests describe scooters as the ideal way to explore the area, especially for reaching surf spots along the coast. The narrow, bumpy final stretch of road to Nets is easily managed on a scooter, unlike a car.
  • Tuk-tuk
A reliable tuk-tuk team is available directly through Nets. Also easy to hail locally around Ahangama town.
Destinations: Ahangama town center, beaches, Galle Fort (40 min), Weligama, Turtle Beach (20 min north), Sinharaja Rainforest (2 hours inland), Yala National Park
Reviews: Guests highlight Nets' on-call tuk-tuk team as reliable and convenient. The last 200m of the access road is narrow and bumpy, making the ride a little rough, but guests confirm it is manageable.
  • Bicycle rental
Nets can help arrange bicycle rentals on request; guided cycling tours through paddy fields are also available.
Destinations: Ahangama paddy fields, nearby villages, coastal cycling routes, local surf spots
  • Local bus
Local buses run throughout the day from Ahangama along the southern coastal road. Check timetables at https://sltb.eseat.lk/bus/schedules.
Destinations: Galle Fort (40 min), Unawatuna, Matara, Weligama, Mirissa
  • Private car or van
Nets can help organize car or van rentals and private transfers for group day trips. Note that the final 200m approach to the property is a narrow, unlit dirt road, which makes it unsuitable for standard cars. Arrivals by car should park at the main road and walk the remaining stretch.
Destinations: Yala National Park, Udawalawe National Park (under 2 hours), Sinharaja Rainforest (2 hours), Pearl Bay Water Park near Colombo (1.5 hours)
Reviews: One guest explicitly notes that the last 200m to Nets cannot be reached by car due to the narrow, bumpy dirt road with no lighting at night. Scooters and tuk-tuks handle the access road without issue.
  • No parking
No dedicated parking is mentioned on the Nets website. Note that the last ~200m of the approach road to Nets is a narrow, bumpy dirt track, making car access difficult. Guests arriving by scooter or tuk-tuk are better suited for the final stretch.
