About Surfbreak - Puerto Escondido

Surfbreak PXM is a private members-only coliving and coworking villa just steps from the beach in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca — an authentic Mexican fishing and surf town. The fully renovated, four-story villa features 28 rooms, 3 glass conference rooms, a solar-shaded rooftop deck, and a private pool. Stays range from one week to a year, with local community managers on hand to help members live as locals.

Origin story

Surfbreak was born from the founder's search for a better way to live. Reflecting on the best times in their life — graduate school surrounded by interesting people from around the world, working and living together — and later hosting Airbnb guests at a beach house on Oahu while building affordable, solar-powered homes, the founder came to believe that creating neighborhoods and surrounding oneself with stellar humans was more fulfilling than living alone in a large house.

After a week-long hike and vision quest on Kauai, the founder stopped believing that a huge house to yourself produced happiness. The goal became to create the ideal home: an amazing space, filled with stellar humans, with all daily essentials provided — from soaps and linens to snacks and a fully stocked kitchen. With solid management in place, members would have more time to explore, cultivate deep connections, and live their best lives.

The experiment exceeded all expectations. Members fell in love, obtained dream jobs, and lived life to the fullest. Countless members described Surfbreak as healing — "medicine for the soul" — validating the founder's conviction that loneliness, as US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has said, is "the nation's most serious mental health hazard."

Community philosophy

Surfbreak describes itself as "a community of givers." Members and staff are committed to ethical living — contributing daily to each other, their communities, and the planet, leaving people and things better than they found them, while becoming better versions of themselves.

Slow and sustainable tourism is at the heart of the Surfbreak PXM experience. Members are encouraged to dive into life as a local in Puerto Escondido, guided by community managers who call the town home.

Membership is application-based, with a deliberate selection process designed to attract warm, fun, and successful people who genuinely vibe with each other. The community is described as a mixture of ambitious self-starters and friendly, open-minded creatives — dynamic, motivated, and talented people who seek experience and success through collaboration and travel.

The philosophy is woven into everything: from the moment members arrive with a suitcase and a device, they receive an instant community. Activities — shared meals, rooftop sunsets, weekend surf trips, hikes, freedives, and volunteer experiences — emerge naturally, with space for both connection and solitude.

Being selected as a member of Surfbreak's ohana carries both the social benefits and responsibilities that embody aloha — respecting the land that is hosting the community and the people who surround it.

Location

Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Surfbreak PXM is a private gated villa situated between Puerto Escondido's two most iconic stretches of sand — Zicatela and La Punta — steps from the Pacific Ocean. The property sits on a quiet corner in a relaxed surf town on the Oaxacan coast, offering ocean views and the sound of waves just a 1–2 minute walk from the beach.

Puerto Escondido is a vibrant Mexican fishing village and surf town rich in culture. The surrounding area features countless restaurants, yoga studios, shops, bars, and clubs — all within easy walking distance. Local boutiques and markets like the Mercado de Zicatela and Frutas y Verduras de la Costa are nearby, as are popular restaurants such as El Cafecito, Fish Shack La Punta, and Savanna Café & Mezcal. Nature lovers can explore nearby turtle release programs, bioluminescence tours, dolphin and whale watching, hot springs, and Mezcal tastings.

Guests consistently describe the location as quiet and relaxing despite its proximity to the main strip, noting it is "away enough where it's quiet but walking distance from the main strip." The area is widely regarded as peaceful and safe, with a laid-back surf culture atmosphere that feels more grounded than busier Mexican coastal destinations.

Getting around

  • Very walkable
Beach in 1-2 min; La Punta and Zicatela each within 10-15 min on foot, with restaurants, cafes, shops, surf spots, and a market all nearby.
Reviews: Guests consistently highlight the walkability. La Punta (10-15 min) offers restaurants, cafes, shops, and coworking spots; Zicatela (15 min the other way) is the go-to for nightlife. A market, small food shops, and several cafes are within a couple of blocks. One guest notes the in-between position means a decent walk to reach either hotspot.
  • Local taxi
Local taxis are readily available throughout Puerto Escondido. Surfbreak also has a trusted local ride and taxi service for members, and one guest notes a pickup from the bus station was arranged.
Destinations: Downtown Puerto Escondido (Centro), Playa Bacocho, Playa Carrizalillo, and other nearby beaches and surf spots
Reviews: One guest specifically recommends taking a taxi home after 9-10pm, noting that while the area feels safe, local police have been known to stop and hassle tourists on late-night walks. Taxis are seen as a simple, low-cost way to avoid that.
  • Free parking
Easy parking is available at or near the property, as noted by multiple guests in reviews. No specific costs or reservation requirements are mentioned.
