About Nesting Away Coliving

Nesting Away is a small, intentional coliving (7 bedrooms in a 450m² villa) in the Italian countryside, 1 hour north of Rome near the medieval village of Orte. Designed for remote workers, entrepreneurs, and freelancers, it offers a dedicated coworking space with dual Starlink networks, a 10,000m² garden with swimming pool, and a tight-knit community where guests go from working alone to building real friendships.

Origin story

Nesting Away was founded by Fede and Ola, who are remote workers themselves. Driven by the belief that colivings solve loneliness better than hotels ever could, they set out to create something deliberately different from the large, chaotic, impersonal colivings found in cities like Lisbon or Barcelona — places where guests meet on Tuesday and are gone by Friday.

Their answer was a small, founder-run space in the Italian countryside: not because countryside is trendy, but because it's where people actually slow down — sleeping better, focusing more, and forming deeper friendships. By settling near Orte, they also committed to giving back to the local community, bringing digital nomads to a real Italian town, boosting the local economy, and showcasing the charm of small Italian towns rather than adding to tourist-saturated cities.

Community philosophy

Nesting Away is built on the conviction that community doesn't happen by accident — it's designed through shared meals, intentional moments, and a carefully curated group of residents. Check-ins happen only on the 1st and 15th of each month, stays run 4–8 weeks minimum, and every applicant goes through a personal 15-minute discovery call with Fede or Ola. The reasoning is simple: one bad community member ruins everyone's experience.

The space welcomes remote workers who want genuine connection, not just a cheap bed — people who work seriously on their craft, respect shared spaces, and are open-minded. Activities like community dinners (3+ times per week), Nonna Maria's pasta-making classes, pool afternoons, wine nights, and group day trips are all optional but designed to make connection happen naturally, never forced.

Nesting Away also supports the local Orte community: guests eat at local restaurants, buy from local shops, and participate in authentic Italian life — becoming part of the community rather than passing tourists.

Activities

Location

Vocabolo Villa Alberti, Orte, 01028, Italy

Nesting Away is set in a 450m² villa in the Italian countryside, approximately 2km from Orte — a medieval hilltop village in the province of Viterbo, Lazio. The surrounding landscape is characterised by rolling green hills, fruit trees, and wide open views, offering a tranquil and restorative environment far from urban noise.

The property sits about 1 hour north of Rome and 2 hours south of Florence, placing it at a crossroads between Lazio, Tuscany, and Umbria. The wider Tuscia region is known for its Etruscan heritage, ancient hilltop villages, thermal hot springs (Saturnia), and wine-growing estates.

Guests consistently describe the setting as peaceful and nature-immersed — "quiet nooks," birdsong, stargazing, and "rolling green hills with fresh mountain air." However, some note that the villa is fairly remote from Orte town: the 3km route involves a steep downhill walk with no sidewalk and a strenuous climb back up. The bus connection is available on weekdays but doesn't run on Sundays, and the last bus is around 6 PM. Guests with a car enjoy much greater independence.

Getting around

  • Not walkable
Orte town is 2km away; the path is steep with no sidewalk, making the return climb strenuous.
Reviews: Guests warn the walk looks short on maps but involves a steep, unsidewalked descent into town and a gruelling hike back up. One guest described the recommended trail as more of an unkept scramble than a walk. Most end up relying on the community car.
  • Community car
A community car driven by the community manager is available for shared trips. Costs approximately €0.25/km, split among participants.
Destinations: Medieval Orte village, local restaurants and bars, Tarquinia Lido beach (50 min west), wine estates in Tuscany (1 hour north), Saturnia hot springs (1.5 hours north), Appennini mountain hikes (1 hour east), Calcata village, cheese-making farm (20 min south).
Reviews: Regularly used for grocery runs and town trips, and well appreciated. However, some guests felt uncomfortable being dependent on the manager for everyday basics like water and food shopping, and recommend bringing your own car for full spontaneity.
  • Own car or rental
Guests can bring their own vehicle or arrange a car rental for full independence. On-site parking is available.
Destinations: Full flexibility to explore the region: Orte town, Tuscany (1 hour), Rome (45 min), and all surrounding areas at your own pace.
Reviews: Consistently recommended across reviews as the best option for independence. Guests who arrived with their own car appreciated the freedom to head into town or further afield spontaneously, without relying on shared arrangements.
  • Regional train
Direct trains depart from Orte Station (5km from the villa). The community manager can drop guests at the station.
Destinations: Rome (45 min, €5–7), Florence (2 hours), Naples (2 hours by high-speed train).
Reviews: One of the most praised aspects of the location. Guests consistently highlight the fast, direct connection to Rome Termini (around 40–45 minutes), and one guest notes a direct link from Fiumicino airport as well. Widely described as easy and convenient.
  • Local bus
Public buses connect the area to Orte town and nearby villages. Frequency can be unreliable; buses do not run on Sundays and the last service is around 6 PM.
Destinations: Orte town centre (medieval village, shops, restaurants, supermarkets).
Reviews: Guests note it exists as an option but consider it unreliable in practice. The Sunday blackout and early last service around 6 PM make it impractical for evening plans or spontaneous trips.
  • Rental bike
Bikes available to rent on-site at €2/day or €50/month.
Destinations: Orte village and surroundings — note that the return route from town involves a steep uphill, requiring good fitness.
Reviews: Mentioned as a theoretical option, but guests caution that riding back uphill from town is extremely demanding. Only realistically suitable for guests in very good physical shape.
  • Free parking
Free parking is available in the villa's garden for guests arriving by car. No reservation required.
