Tertulia operates from a restored 1700s hamlet in the wild part of Tuscany's Mugello forest. The coliving focuses on regenerative living and rural revival, offering residents the chance to live close to nature while working remotely. The space combines sustainable farming practices with community life, featuring homemade local food, seasonal rhythms, and a deep connection to the forest environment.
Francesco and Giorgia moved from Milan in 2005 and bought Podere Il Monte, marking the birth of the Tertulia.farm idea. They learned to live in the forest, cutting wood for warmth and growing food, while undertaking extensive restoration work on the splendid 1700s village that had been abandoned by peasant sharecroppers in 1985.
The Tertulia project as a living laboratory of sustainability was born in 2012, rooted in the search to embrace permaculture ethics in everyday life: care of the earth, care of the person, and sharing of resources. For eight years they hosted refugees in a family welcome project, and organized courses in permaculture, regenerative agriculture, and mindfulness.
The Forest Coliving Coworking project evolved from a 2019 design inspired by social innovation and plant intelligence, originally conceived as "coworking with plants" but adapted to match Tertulia's potential as a remote hamlet surrounded by forest. Since 2020, they have welcomed over 200 individuals from more than 20 countries, creating a unique space that goes beyond typical coliving through its rural, nature-immersed, and community-focused characteristics.
Tertulia's culture is rooted in inner and outer regeneration, guided by permaculture ethics: care of the earth, care of the person, and sharing of resources. The community believes that a community attitude is the key for a society where everyone can live better, with trust, cooperation and friendship as pillars for building meaningful and fulfilling life.
They are inspired by living in harmony with the environment, taking an active and aware role in the network of life while caring for themselves and future generations. Their actions aim to create positive impact, especially in the rural area around them, through regenerating landscape for food production and connections between people.
The community operates as a dynamic project in continuous evolution, open to stimuli and confrontations, requiring the contribution of people and energy to grow and develop. They have developed a culture of welcoming and being together, fostering relationships based on trust through practices like the honesty bar system.
Tertulia serves as a rural creative hub contributing to rural revival, with a growing diffuse community network spanning both locals and former colivers who introduce innovative activities and services that enhance both the local area and the coliving experience.
Tertulia is located in a restored 1700s hamlet in the wild part of Tuscany, specifically in the forest of Mugello in the Apennine hills. The property is surrounded by lush nature that blends seamlessly with the forest, featuring centuries-old chestnut trees and olive groves.
The coliving sits in a predominantly rural area accessed by a white road uphill, drawing clean water from a mountain aquifer with no pollution in the surrounding area.
