About Somewhere Different - Blackpool

Somewhere Different Blackpool is a coworking/coliving space for digital nomads, remote workers, and location-independent professionals, housed in a substantial 4-storey Victorian house five minutes from the beach in the North West of England. With 1,000 Mbps internet, two dedicated coworking rooms, and up to 17 guests, it offers the most cost-effective coworking accommodation in the UK — at prices comparable to Chiang Mai — while delivering a uniquely English cultural experience at the weekends.

Origin story

Duncan Ridgley, a former full-time digital nomad for five years, saw first-hand what remote workers look for in a place to live and work. Having previously built boutique hotels in Sri Lanka and Egypt, and experimented with coworking tree houses in Transylvania, he identified an opportunity in 2020: to charge the same price in Blackpool as in the Egyptian desert, making England accessible to the global nomad community.

In November 2020, he restored a closed Victorian hotel in Blackpool — a former family home with servant quarters that had served mill workers from Manchester during the industrial revolution era — and redesigned it purely for digital nomads. The restoration took place entirely during the COVID-19 lockdown, and Somewhere Different Blackpool opened just as restrictions lifted.

Community philosophy

The guiding ethos at Somewhere Different Blackpool is "work smart in the week, explore somewhere different at the weekend." The space is exclusively for digital nomads and remote workers — not holidaymakers — which creates natural peer pressure to stay productive Monday to Friday, while freeing up weekends for genuine cultural immersion.

The community is built around shared rituals: every Sunday, a group dinner brings together new arrivals and existing residents. Every Friday, a "Show and Tell" session invites everyone to present what they're working on professionally, fostering connection and peer feedback. Saturdays are reserved for group day trips — walks to country pubs, horse riding, beach excursions, and visits to Liverpool and Manchester.

The house is run under hotel rules rather than rental rules, and residents are encouraged to treat it as their home: doing their own washing up, respecting quiet hours, and looking out for one another. The aim is for guests to "put their guard down and be themselves" within a like-minded community of location-independent professionals.

Location

27 Lonsdale Rd, Blackpool, FY1 6EE, United Kingdom

Somewhere Different is located in a substantial 4-storey Victorian house in Blackpool, in the North West of England. The building was originally a Victorian family home with servant quarters that was converted into a hotel, and is now a coworking/coliving space. It is situated on a mainly residential, quiet street.

The house is just a 5-minute walk from Blackpool's long sandy beach, which stretches between two Victorian piers. Stanley Park — a classic Victorian park with a boating lake, bandstand, and Art Deco tea house — is a 15-minute walk away. The property sits right in the centre of town, within walking distance of hundreds of bars, shows, nightclubs, live entertainment venues, gyms, nail parlours, and hairdressers.

Reviewers consistently describe the house and street as quiet, with one noting they "got a good night's sleep" and the property being "2 minutes to the beach." The party district is about 15 minutes away, so noise from nightlife is not an issue at the house. One reviewer noted that the neighbourhood outside can feel rough, with cannabis smells, though this is characteristic of parts of central Blackpool rather than the coliving itself.
