    About Rooral Coliving

Rooral operates the first village coliving in Benarrabá, a white pueblo in Málaga's mountains. They pioneer regenerative travel by removing walls between colivers and locals, creating one integrated community. The entire village welcomes remote workers, offering authentic cultural immersion beyond typical nomad bubbles. Rooral focuses on redefining 21st century success through slow rural living, meaningful connections with neighbors, and contributing to village revitalization.

    Origin story

Juan Barbed grew up believing success meant living in big cities, which took him to San Francisco, Paris and Bangkok. Everything changed when his grandmother Ángeles passed away and he returned to her tiny Spanish village to say goodbye. Strangers welcomed them with hugs and turned their sadness into celebration.

That moment Juan realized the greatest lessons of humanity don't come from skyscrapers, but from the heart of villages. He saw that half of Spain's villages are dying while cities are full of stress and loneliness - an imbalance threatening wellbeing and future. But remote work had made it possible for many to live anywhere.

Juan asked: "What if we use this chance to bring life back to our villages?" This became the Rooral movement - using remote work as a tool to revitalize rural areas while offering urban dwellers a chance to reconnect with what truly matters.

    Community philosophy

Rooral believes villages teach people to find balance between doing and being. The rural world teaches connection with what is natural and local, using hands to create life, leaving doors open, calling neighbors and celebrating in community.

They pioneer regenerative travel where locals want visitors, people stay longer, and become local contributors rather than extractive tourists. Community interest is at the core, co-creating together rather than being part of the problem.

Rooral removes walls to become one with the local community, refusing to create another "nomad bubble." The entire village welcomes, hosts and co-creates, providing true cultural immersion. They bridge the urban-rural gap by connecting people from different backgrounds and life experiences, fostering meaningful connections between locals and remote workers.

As a non-profit, any excess funds go to local projects. They help guests use their talents to support the local community through initiatives like music documentaries, supporting farmers, intergenerational quizzes, and various volunteer projects that benefit the village.

    Hosts

Juan grew up with the narrative that success is in big cities, which took him to live in San Francisco, Paris and Bangkok. But one unexpected trip changed everything when his grandma Ángeles passed away, and he returned to say bye to her Spanish tiny village. Strangers welcomed them with hugs and turned their sadness into celebration. That moment he realized greatest lessons of humanity don't come from skyscrapers, but from the heart of villages. Seeing that half of Spain's villages are dying while cities are full of stress and loneliness, he founded the Rooral movement to use remote work as a chance to bring life back to villages.

Anna serves as the Coliving Lead at Rooral, managing the day-to-day operations and guest experience in the village coliving.

María leads the digital marketing efforts for Rooral, helping spread the message of regenerative rural living and the village coliving model.

Jon leads the strategic development of Rooral, helping shape the long-term vision and expansion of the village coliving model.

Leti leads rural entrepreneurship initiatives, helping develop local business opportunities and supporting the economic revitalization of the village.

Silvestre is the mayor of Benarrabá and a key supporter of the Rooral project. He believes remote workers generate income in low season for homes, bars, and local businesses, becoming long-term visitors that become locals. He serves as both guardian of the village traditions and dreamer of its future.

The village grandmothers are considered the real bosses of Rooral, representing the wisdom and heart of the community. They welcome colivers with warmth, share traditional knowledge, and embody the authentic rural spirit that makes Benarrabá special.

David is a storytelling resident who helps document and share the stories of the village and the Rooral community, contributing to the cultural preservation and narrative of rural revitalization.
