About Moritsgarden

Moritsgarden is Norway's longest-operating coliving for digital nomads, set in a 400-year-old farmhouse on the west coast. Located in the small village of Bjørkedal — surrounded by majestic mountains, fjords, and a protected olivine forest — it offers private rooms, high-speed fibre internet, and flexible coworking spaces. A small, untamed coliving with no bosses, few rules, and big on care, it blends regenerative travel with hands-on rural living.

Origin story

Moritsgarden grew from a desire to revitalize the home village of Bjørkedal — a small, proud village on Norway's west coast once famous for its boatbuilders, but no longer at its peak. Norway has some 40,000 empty farmhouses, and over the last 20 years, 40,000 people have fled the countryside.

The vision was to turn a 400-year-old farmhouse into what co-founder Jozsef describes as "a high-tech hope of a future of values" — bringing with it the wisdom incorporated in the walls. Moritsgarden Coliving is Jozsef's dream, which he made real with the help of many volunteers.

For co-founder Anne Bjørkedal, the urge to revitalize her home village and share its values is more than a project — it is a lifestyle. The philosophy: digital nomad societies in a village are the new hope, keeping buildings alive and inspiring new generations to value what rural communities have to offer.

Community philosophy

Moritsgarden strongly believes that the world needs societies more than ever — forming new ways of coming together in respect and mutual learning.

The coliving welcomes digital nomads of all kinds: carefree travelers, tech-savvy opportunity-seekers, and those who find freedom through digital tools. The belief is that "the space, the freedom and the respect for each other is the root of all things magic."

Residents are not tourists but short-term locals. Simply by visiting for a month or two, they bring intelligence, initiative, inspiration, and knowledge to a village that needs new eyes. In return, nature, a calm attitude, and deep and simple wisdom are the gifts back.

Daily life is built around belonging, space, and contentment — with skill-sharing, community dinners, and getting to know neighbours. The coliving operates with flat structures and cooperation: no bosses, few rules, big on care.

Location

Bjørkedalseidet 8, 6120 Folkestad, Norway

Moritsgarden is situated in Bjørkedal, a small, remote valley village on the west coast of Norway in the Sunnmøre region. The village has a population of roughly 100 people and is surrounded by majestic mountains, a lake, and a protected olivine forest. The area has deep roots in Viking-era boatbuilding and traditional Norwegian craftsmanship.

The nearest town is Nordfjordeid, about a 15-minute drive away, which is where residents go for shops and café life. The landscape around Bjørkedal provides a spectacular base for exploring fjords, glaciers, and mountains — with Minitrolltunga (Galten) and many hiking trails accessible directly from the property.

Guest reviews consistently describe the setting as peaceful, quiet, and deeply rural — "a lovely little village by the lake, surrounded by beautiful nature." The remoteness is embraced as part of the experience: as one guest noted, it is "a village straight out of a statistics report," while others call it "a true hidden gem" and "a perfect balance of work and personal time." It is worth noting that public transportation in the area is essentially non-existent, and a car is needed for most trips beyond the village.
