About Ecoisleta Coliving

EcoIsleta is a small, sustainable coliving in the La Isleta neighborhood of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, run by a local Canarian family. Designed for remote workers, conscious travellers, and artists, it offers a quiet place to work near the beach while living in a purposeful community. Located in a 125-year-old traditional home, it combines a calm, productive environment with genuine community life and a strong commitment to the local neighborhood.

Origin story

Rita and Jonatan are Canarians, born and raised in the La Isleta neighborhood of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. They met at the local high school in the 1990s and have been together for over 30 years.

Since 2008, they began getting involved in social, environmental, and community initiatives in La Isleta, publishing a local community blog (ConoceLaIsleta) and eventually writing two books about the neighborhood. After years of collaborating with local associations and neighborhood projects, they came to understand that the neighborhood's sustainability was their greatest challenge.

This led them to open their certified organic shop in 2014. A year later, they bought the house where the coliving now stands — no coincidence, as they had already spent more than 12 years working to protect and raise awareness about the value of these old houses. In 2019, they opened it as sustainable accommodation, and in 2022 they transformed it into an Eco Coliving.

EcoIsleta is conceived as a project designed to help transform La Isleta into a more sustainable and humane place — one that can only be achieved through the collaboration of both residents and travelers, reflecting the neighborhood's historically multicultural and open identity.

Community philosophy

EcoIsleta defines community as living together with shared values. The coliving aims to build healthy relationships between members — remote workers, conscious travellers, artists, freelancers, and entrepreneurs — while integrating into the life of the La Isleta neighborhood rather than becoming an isolated bubble.

The community is intentionally small (around 7 residents), creating an intimate, calm, and relaxed atmosphere where connections form effortlessly. There is no fixed weekly programme of activities, but members are guaranteed something will happen each week: shared dinners (sometimes open to locals and other travellers), hikes on nearby volcanoes or across the island, board game afternoons, and spontaneous outings.

What sets EcoIsleta apart is its open community model: locals and other remote workers in the city are occasionally invited to join activities, fostering meaningful connections between coliving members and the wider neighborhood. The coliving also organises activities with local schools and organisations to create a positive local impact — such as visiting high schools to discuss remote work, leading neighborhood tours, and running clean-ups at El Confital beach and nearby volcanoes.

Participation in activities is always optional, and members are free to balance privacy with community as they see fit. The coliving is explicitly not a party house; the atmosphere is productive during the day and social in the evenings and on weekends.
