About Colivium

What is coliving? And how can you find the right one for you?

What is coliving?

There are many definitions. In our case, it’s living with others while working remotely.

You have your own room and you share kitchens, workspaces, and common areas. You work during the day, and then you might cook dinner together, join yoga on the rooftop, or plan an epic weekend hike.

When it works, it’s magic. You extend your two-week stay to two months. The strangers you met start to feel like family. You understand why some people spend most of their year bouncing between colivings.

When it doesn’t… it’s basically just a shared apartment with WiFi. Awkward silences in the kitchen, no real connections, and a vibe that makes you wonder why people rave about coliving.

Both experiences are called “coliving”. Online, they look identical – same amenity lists and the promise of “community”. You don’t know which you’ve booked until you’re standing in that awkwardly silent kitchen.

What makes a real community coliving?

Community doesn’t just happen. It’s built intentionally.

The strongest colivings share some traits:

  • Right size for real friendships: Usually 8–18 people. Small enough to build meaningful connections, big enough for community vibrancy.
  • Shared rituals: Weekly family dinners, Sunday planning sessions, hikes, crepes night, skillshares… regular gatherings that provide conditions for genuine connection.
  • Hosts who are present: Not faceless managers—they eat with you, plan with you, and genuinely care. They show up in the stories guests tell because they're part of the experience, not just facilitating it.
  • Longer stays: Two weeks minimum, because friendships take time.
  • Spaces built for connection: Maybe a big kitchen, comfy common area, spacious rooftop… places where you naturally cross paths throughout the day.

But how do you find these community-oriented colivings? And how do you tell the difference between marketing promises and reality? That’s where Colivium helps.

How Colivium helps

Other platforms often treat colivings like hotels: WiFi speed ✓, kitchen ✓, clean room ✓.

We go deeper! We analyze hundreds of reviews to highlight what really matters. We extract review patterns and guest behavior. And since we’ve been staying at colivings for years, we know what to look for.

For example:

  • Community strength: Do guests connect with other guests? Do they extend their stays, and come back? Or are they only mentioning staff members?
  • Working conditions: Dedicated quiet workspaces? Call rooms? 24/7 access? Reliable internet? We flag any makeshift setups and limited-hours spaces that can make remote work frustrating.
  • Cooking setup: Can multiple people cook simultaneously? Are necessities like oil and spices provided? Or is cooking unnecessary because you can easily get prepared meals?

And we cover many more aspects – anything we’ve noticed that consistently makes a difference.
